When I first entered the DK2 Lecture Hall, just in time for my Social Engagement Class at 3 a.m., I noticed that there was already a person sitting in front of the computer at the front hall, where the lecturer usually is. He introduced himself as Mr. Gan, but preferred for us to call him by his other moniker, "Machine Gun" due to his talkative nature. He is what I envision myself to be in the future, a software expert. Along with his colleagues, he developed an education platform called "iLearnAce" which is meant for primary and secondary school students. For our Social Engagement Project, we were assigned the task of teaching primary school students in SK Bangsar to use iLearnAce as their modern tool of education.
Machine Gun's explanation was concise and engaging. I was able to obtain a lot of information regarding the learning platform that we are entrusted with. iLearnAce contains a lot of useful features; one of them is to access a database containing notes regarding the four core subjects (Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics and Science) which follows the latest KSSR and KSSM standards. The students can also use iLearnAce to create their own mind map and share it with others, once it has been filtered and reviewed by teachers and experts. But the main attraction of the platform is the fact that you can create your own avatar, give it a house to live in, provide it with food and shelter, as well as decorate its house with furniture, appliances and toys. The catch to this feature is that the students must spend an in-game currency called "coins" to purchase them, and these coins can only be obtained by answering practical assessments, exercises and assignments taken from the four core subjects. As a result, the students are more willing to do their exercises as well as revise on the notes, so that they can achieve higher scores, which in turn nets higher coins.
The only thing I had with me as soon as Mr. Gan left the lecture hall was feelings of admiration towards the creation of this brilliant platform, and the eager anticipation of having to teach others, specifically children on how to use it to its maximum capability. This marks the start of my training as a trainer.
