Seasons in The Sun

Nasi lemak is the most important meal of the day!
Its our second day in SK Bangsar! This time, we decided to have our breakfast in school, together with the kids. It was a very good opportunity to bond with them even further. While we were at it, we also discussed with them about our plans for the day. The kids agreed to start immediately with i-Learn Ace as soon as we all finished our meals.

Switching mentors from time to time can prove useful,
especially when a photo needs to be taken!
This time, the kids proved themselves independent in being able to access and use the platform. They had no problem logging in, writing e-notes, checking their statistics and retrieving the questions without any external help. As promised, I helped her with her English and Science subjects. For English, we practiced her mastery on prepositions. I gave her brief descriptions of certain prepositions such as "in", "or", and "at". To help her even further, I translated the language for her to Bahasa Malaysia, a subject which she excels the most. After answering 2-3 papers, she has finally managed to score an A! I'm sure with enough time and practice, she will eventually be able to add English into one of her mastered subjects. As for Science, we delved into the topic of respiratory systems of animals. To further improve her understandings as well as raise her interest, I also gave her additional information on some of the animals (with the help of Google, of course!).

Athirah Humaira at the top of the leaderboards
One of the features available in i-Learn Ace is a ranking system, where the students who have registered with i-Learn Ace are shown their standings among the rest of the students. The scoring system is based on the amount of A grades that they have obtained from the exercises that they have answered, and it resets every month. The rankings are divided into two categories, among their school, and in Malaysia. Athirah was so engrossed with i-Learn Ace, that by the time our session had almost ended, she was ranked the first in her school! I am so proud of her achievement, being able to rank the first among 60 other students is not an ordinary feat.

Explaining the rules before our game
In the afternoon, we played some games to add flavour to our program. I introduced this game called telepathy, a variation of the game telephone, where the students form a line and the person in the front row draws a picture to be guessed and redrawn by the person behind them until it reaches the last person at the back. Everyone enjoyed the game, especially when they were tasked to draw Jason, one of the mentors in our group! Once we were done playing, we had our lunch and waited for the call for prayer.

Alas, all good things come to an end. We finally did a closing ceremony where everyone gave their feedback on the program. The kids gave positive comments, mostly about how much they enjoyed themselves these two days. With sadness but smiles in our faces, we exchanged goodbyes and us mentors wrote to them warm wishes in their notebook as a memento of our short but memorable meeting.

As someone who has not done a community project at this level, the entire experience was very impactful to me. I've come to understand that by teaching others, we teach ourselves to be a better person in the process. Not only have I learned to appreciate the advancements of technology in our day and age, I've also realized that everything can be enjoyable once you set your mind to it, especially if you have your friends alongside you.

I hope that Athirah and her friends at SK Bangsar will keep utilizing the platform to further enhance their understanding. I know that with enough dedication and passion, getting straight As for UPSR is  not a pipe dream. That's it from me to SK Bangsar, all the best to you guys!

I assure you we had a blast throughout the program, hope to hear from you guys soon!
